A Family of Bonfire & Gunpowder
I'm Darren Bishop, owner & creator of VLCFFF, and my connection with fireworks, tradition and festivals began long before I ever thought of them as a career.
I was born in the UK into a family with a long connection to the bonfire traditions of Lewes, East Sussex. My great-grandfather, William Charles Hutson, joined the Juvenile Waterloo Bonfire Society in 1875 and worked as a gunsmith, even making the locally famous thunderous “rousers” used during Lewes celebrations back in the day.
My grandfather later became Chairman of Waterloo Bonfire Society, and I was made a member from the day I was born. Some of my earliest memories are of preparing fireworks for Bonfire Night with my family and watching the fireworks.
Learning the Fire
By the age of 14, I had officially joined Waterloo's fireworks team. I initially helped with the artwork and construction of the spectacular tableaux, while watching and learning how the fireworks were designed, built and fired.
At 16, I became the youngest member of the Waterloo committee at the time, and over the following years I took increasing responsibility for the society's fireworks. By the 1990s I was serving as Captain of Fire and later Captain of Fireworks.
Those years gave me something that has stayed with me ever since — not just a love of fireworks, but an understanding of their craft, science, tradition and the people behind them.
Ignite Fireworks
In 1997, I took the next step and started a professional fireworks display business called Ignite Fireworks based in Newhaven, East Sussex.
Operating from Avis Way Industrial Estate, Ignite quickly grew from a new venture into a professional fireworks business, providing displays and pyrotechnic effects for sporting, corporate and entertainment events across the UK.
Through clients including Active Entertainment, I worked on events for Charlton Athletic, Richard Branson, London Broncos, the Prince's Trust, Reynard Motor Sports and many others, as well as the huge Millennium celebrations of 1999 — including Richard Branson's Mega Millennium Party in Oxfordshire.
It was also during these years that I became particularly well known for using Spanish pyrotechnics, at a time when many of the effects were still relatively unfamiliar in the UK.
From Bonfire to Fallas
In 2017, my journey took me from Lewes to Valencia, where I discovered a place where fireworks are not simply entertainment — they are part of the culture, traditions and everyday life of the city.
Since moving here, I've had the opportunity to work alongside and build friendships with many of Valencia's pyrotechnic companies and professionals, while continuing to explore the incredible world of Fallas, mascletàs, castillos, correfocs and Spanish pyrotechnics.
And that is ultimately where VLCFFF comes from.
From Lewes Bonfire to Valencia Fallas, fireworks have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. VLCFFF brings that experience, passion and knowledge together to share Valencia's festivals, traditions and pyrotechnics with an English-speaking audience around the world.
