Fireworks Rules in valencia - A Simple Guide for Visitors

This is a general guide based on local regulations and experience. Always follow official guidance

“What am I actually allowed to do?”

Every March, Valencia becomes one of the loudest cities in Europe thanks to Fallas. Firecrackers, bangs, whistles and small fireworks are part of daily life.

For newcomers, this can be exciting, but also confusing.
So here is a plain-English guide to what you can and cannot do with consumer fireworks (“petardos”).

What ARE Consumer Fireworks?

These are fireworks sold to the public in authorised shops:

  • Small bang snaps and novelty items
  • Rockets
  • Various sized firecrackers and strings
  • Roman candles and low-level fountains
  • Cakes (batteries) & other aerial effects

They are not professional display fireworks. Those are only handled by licensed pyrotechnicians.

When You CANNOT Use Fireworks

The city sets quiet night hours (The Curfew) - where fireworks are banned in public places.

Night Restrictions (Approximate)

  • Early March (before main week): No fireworks between 22:00 – 07:30

  • Main Fallas Week (14–19 March): No fireworks between 02:00 – 07:30 (unless special licensed event)

  • After the Cremà (20 March onward): Fireworks effectively end

If you are out late at night, assume fireworks are not allowed unless you are at an official event.

“Respect Hours” (Not Illegal, But Strongly Encouraged)

These are recommended quiet periods to help residents, children and pets:

  • 09:00 – 10:00
  • 15:00 – 17:00

You won’t usually be fined here, but locals appreciate the consideration. The Police will always have the last say.

Places Where Fireworks Are Always Prohibited

Even during permitted hours, fireworks are not permitted in:

  • Children’s playgrounds
  • School entrances
  • Hospitals and health centres
  • Inside buildings or balconies
  • Areas clearly marked “No Petardos”
  • The Turia Gardens and other protected green zones

If it looks like a family, medical or protected space - don’t light fireworks there!

Age & Category Rules

Spain uses categories (F1, F2, F3). Shops will usually guide buyers, but the basics are:

  • F1: Very small novelty fireworks – children with adult supervision

  • F2: Standard consumer fireworks – 16+

  • F3: Larger consumer fireworks – 18+ only

If in doubt, ask the shop. Never assume.

Safety Distances (Important)

  • Tiny novelty items: ~1 metre

  • Standard firecrackers: ~8 metres

  • Larger items: 15 metres or more

Always light fireworks on the ground, never in your hand unless the item is specifically designed for that.

Common Sense Rules (Unwritten but Heavily Enforced)

  You can be fined for:

  • Throwing fireworks at people or animals

  • Lighting them inside bars, homes or vehicles

  • Aiming rockets horizontally

  • Using them while intoxicated

  • Causing panic or injury

Local police do intervene, especially at night.

The Simple Visitor Rule

If you remember nothing else, remember this:

  1. Daytime = generally OK (outside quiet hours)
  2. Nighttime = usually OK at official events & Final Week in designated areas
  3. Playgrounds, hospitals & balconies = NEVER OK

Why These Rules Exist

Fallas is about celebration, but also coexistence. The aim is to let people enjoy fireworks without disturbing residents, pets, or public safety. Fireworks in Valencia are EXTREMELY important to the people, a real cultural tradition - don't spoil it.

The rules are set each year by the Ajuntament de València, and timings may shift slightly, but the principles stay the same. Rules correct at the time of writing this article.

Helpful Tip for Visitors

If you want to enjoy fireworks without worrying about rules, simply attend official mascletàs, night displays, and firework shows, they are loud, legal, and spectacular.

For daily schedules and official events, always check the Pyrotechnics Calendar on this website so you know exactly what’s happening and when.

Enjoy the noise, respect the city, and you’ll have an unforgettable Fallas experience.
