Every March, Valencia becomes one of the loudest cities in Europe thanks to Fallas. Firecrackers, bangs, whistles and small fireworks are part of daily life.
For newcomers, this can be exciting, but also confusing.
So here is a plain-English guide to what you can and cannot do with consumer fireworks (“petardos”).
These are fireworks sold to the public in authorised shops:
They are not professional display fireworks. Those are only handled by licensed pyrotechnicians.
The city sets quiet night hours (The Curfew) - where fireworks are banned in public places.
If you are out late at night, assume fireworks are not allowed unless you are at an official event.
These are recommended quiet periods to help residents, children and pets:
You won’t usually be fined here, but locals appreciate the consideration. The Police will always have the last say.
Even during permitted hours, fireworks are not permitted in:
If it looks like a family, medical or protected space - don’t light fireworks there!
Spain uses categories (F1, F2, F3). Shops will usually guide buyers, but the basics are:
If in doubt, ask the shop. Never assume.
Always light fireworks on the ground, never in your hand unless the item is specifically designed for that.
You can be fined for:
Local police do intervene, especially at night.
If you remember nothing else, remember this:
Fallas is about celebration, but also coexistence. The aim is to let people enjoy fireworks without disturbing residents, pets, or public safety. Fireworks in Valencia are EXTREMELY important to the people, a real cultural tradition - don't spoil it.
The rules are set each year by the Ajuntament de València, and timings may shift slightly, but the principles stay the same. Rules correct at the time of writing this article.
If you want to enjoy fireworks without worrying about rules, simply attend official mascletàs, night displays, and firework shows, they are loud, legal, and spectacular.
For daily schedules and official events, always check the Pyrotechnics Calendar on this website so you know exactly what’s happening and when.
Enjoy the noise, respect the city, and you’ll have an unforgettable Fallas experience.
